At that time, the Institute held the status of National Institute of Higher Education (INES)He was known as IABThis continued until the establishment of the University of Blida in 1989, when it became a department within the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. Later, this department was upgraded to Institute of Aviation and Space Studies Pursuant to Executive Decree No. 13-163 dated April 15, 2013.

Since its establishment in 1986, the institute has played a vital role in developing highly qualified human resources in the fields of aircraft maintenance and operation in Algeria. Over the years, its graduates, both civilian and military, have held positions in various aviation and air transport agencies and institutions both within Algeria and abroad.
