The Third National Workshop on Horse Breeding and Equine Medicine at Blida 1 University
Towards Enhancing Scientific and Practical Knowledge in the Management of Equine Lameness
The Institute of Veterinary Sciences at Blida 1 University hosted, on December 6 and 7, the activities of the Third National Workshop on Horse Breeding and Equine Medicine. This event was organized by the Animal Biotechnology Laboratory (LBA) in partnership with the Mitidja University Farm, as part of efforts to support scientific research and develop specialized veterinary practices in the field of equine health.
The workshop was supervised by Professor Rahal Abdelkrim, with the notable participation of several academic researchers, veterinary doctors, and field practitioners. The guest of honor was the Director of the Institute of Veterinary Sciences, Professor Djalal Adel, who emphasized in his opening speech the importance of such scientific meetings in bridging academic research with professional practice.
🐎 Workshop Theme: Equine Lameness
The workshop focused on equine lameness, one of the most common and impactful health issues affecting horses, significantly influencing their functional and athletic performance. The topic highlighted the need for accurate diagnosis and comprehensive therapeutic management.
📅 December 6 Program: Scientific Day
The first day was dedicated to scientific lectures and presentations addressing three main themes:
-
Horse breeding in Algeria, including production, reproduction, nutrition, and health management;
-
Equine medicine, covering common diseases, preventive strategies, and the latest therapeutic innovations;
-
Management of equine lameness, focusing on diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and practical aspects.
These sessions provided a productive scientific platform for discussion and experience sharing among academic researchers, practicing veterinarians, and professionals in the horse breeding sector.
📅 December 7 Program: Practical Workshop
The second day was devoted to a technical hands-on workshop, exclusively intended for practicing veterinarians. It included:
-
Clinical examination of equine lameness related to tendon inflammation;
-
Principles of tendon ultrasonography;
-
Management of emergency cases;
-
Medical treatment and management of recovery and rehabilitation periods.
This practical workshop enabled participants to strengthen their hands-on skills and effectively link theoretical knowledge with field application.
Conclusion
This third national workshop represents a significant scientific milestone in the development of equine medicine and horse breeding in Algeria. It also reflects the strong commitment of Blida 1 University and the Institute of Veterinary Sciences to supporting specialized training, promoting applied scientific research, and serving veterinary practitioners in the field.
